3/30 Identifying Sentence Errors

The following sentence contains either a single error or no error at all. If the sentence contains an error, select the one underlined part that must be changed to make the sentence correct. If the sentence contains no error, select choice E.

Remember to read through the sentence first, make a prediction, and check that prediction against the grammatical rules you know for proper English.

By the time Mitzie and myself got to the box office, all of the tickets for the show had already been soldNo error
There is an error in this sentence, but it is commonly used and subtle enough that you might not notice. Look at choice B. "Myself" is a pronoun, so check for its antecedent. What does it refer to? There is nothing in the sentence for this pronoun to replace. To get a better idea of what exactly is wrong here, remove Mitzie from the sentence.

By the time myself got to the box office, all of the tickets for the show had already been sold.

I don't know anyone who speaks or writes this way. The correct form of a pronoun used as the subject of the sentence is "I".

A: "By the time" is a prepositional phrase with the preposition "by" and the object "time." It is used correctly.

C: "all" is an indefinite pronoun referring to the tickets. It is used correctly.

D: "been sold" is part of the verb phrase "had been sold," which conveys the fact that the tickets were gone before the speaker reached the box office. It is used correctly.

The answer is B.
