Sentence Completions

Link of the Day

The "sore loser" mentality is well-known in politics. This article talks about some of the sore-loser attitudes already appearing in this Presidential race.

5/7 Sentence Completions

Choose the word or set of words that, when inserted in the sentence, best fits the meaning of the sentence as a whole.

Always remember to read the entire sentence before you look at the answer choices. Looking at the answers before you are good and ready will only cost you time, and it might even lead you to choose the wrong answer. Read the sentence and make a prediction, then compare your word to those among the answer choices.

Troy was ------ when he wasn't elected class president: his spirits were so low that there was nothing we could say or do to cheer him up.

Clearly, Troy was upset. He was also sad, melancholic, despondent, and lugubrious. Any of those would work as a prediction in this sentence. Next, look at the answer choices.

A) unctuous

B) disconsolate

C) ebullient

D) inscrutable

E) tenacious

Only B, disconsolate, means sad. The answer is B.

Words tested in this SC
unctuous: oily or greasy
disconsolate: cheerless, dreary
ebullient: boiling, agitated, enthusiastic
inscrutable: difficult to comprehend, fathom, or interpret
tenacious: clinging to an object or surface; adhesive; unwilling to yield or give up.
