Idioms

Link of the Day

Almost every one knows that July 4th is Independence Day. However, most people don't know what actually happened on July 4th, 1776. Only 12 of the 13 colonies formally adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4th. New York did not approve the declaration until July 19th (after some minor changes were made). The declaration was not actually signed until August 2nd. You can learn more about the Declaration of Independence here. The details surrounding the Declaration of Independence would make a great "Excellent Example" for you essay.

7/4 Identifying Sentence Errors

The following sentence contains either a single error or no error at all. If the sentence contains an error, select the one underlined part that must be changed to make the sentence correct. If the sentence contains no error, select choice E.

When you are working on an Identifying Sentence Errors question, read the sentence and focus on anything that stands out and sounds wrong or strange. Then determine whether that part of the sentence actually has an error. Always double-check the other sections of the sentence to verify that they are correct as they are written.
Unbelievable as it may seem, many individuals that fought in the American Revolution were still alive in 1839, the year the world was introduced to photography.  No error

This question is a little tricky because it is testing a grammar rule that many people are not familiar with. If you have studied your idioms, it's a very simple problem. However, if you read through the problem and didn't notice anything that sounds wrong, slow down and check each underlined portion. (A) is error free.  Now, read (B) carefully. Do you know an idiom that might apply here? Hopefully, you have noticed the error. You should use "that" to refer to things and "who" to refer to people. (C) has the correct verb tense and form and (D) is grammatically correct as well. Since you have already spotted the error, (E) cannot be the correct answer.

The correct answer choice is (B).

On sat.collegeboard.org 45% of the responses were correct.
